Jean Cooke passed away at age 87 on Friday November 24th, 2023. She joined her beloved husband and best friend Jim in Heaven, to continue their "forever".
Jean was born July 15th, 1936 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Dalvin R. Cahill MD and Annabel Romig Cahill and baptized at the Railway Chapel in Dennison, Ohio. She graduated from Steubenville High School in 1954 and Denison University in 1958 with a degree in English and Sociology. Jim and Jean met in bowling class at Denison and were married on campus at Swazey Chapel on March 22, 1958 with the whole student body present to earn a church attendance credit. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and in 1957 was honored as both the Sweetheart of SAE and the Military Ball Queen for the ROTC chapter.
Together they lived in State College, PA; Wilmington, OH; Parma, OH; Rocky River, OH; North Canton, OH and finally in Broadview Hts, OH. Wherever they went, Jean was an active community volunteer. She was president of the PTA for Rocky River Co-Op Nursery School, Orchard Hill Elementary in North Canton, and Hilton Elementary and Brecksville Junior High Schools. For 23 years she ushered at Play House Square, for 33 years she worked the Cuyahoga County polls on Election Day and held multiple positions for the Denison Alumni Association including chairing 2 capitol funds campaigns, secretary of the Association and chairing a 50th Reunion Committee among others. While living in North Canton, Jim and Jean initiated the Heritage Estates Allotment Parties (HEAP), a weekend affair that some Cantonians still remember to this day.
Professionally, with post-graduate work from State College, Ohio State and Akron University, for over 25 years, Jean worked almost daily as a substitute teacher for grades 7-12 in State College, PA, Parma HS and at Hoover High School in North Canton (1967-1970) and then in the Brecksville Broadview Hts School System.
Her most rewarding volunteer work was with the Old Stone Church on Public Square in Cleveland. Jean spent over 30+ years in dedicated service. A Deacon for 14 years, an Elder for 14 years, elected to the First Presbyterian Society in 1990 and eventually serving as a director. As a member of the Capitol Assets Millennium Committee she was integral to the erection of the new steeple, reconstruction of the Tiffany stained glass windows and in 2009, creation of the Gallery at Old Stone. She also served on 2 pastor nominating committees, chaired the Congregational Life Committee, the Hospitality Committee, and the Membership and Growth Committee as well as co-chairing the 175th Anniversary program.
Her love of genealogy led to qualifying membership into the DAR for herself and her daughter, and SAR memberships for her husband, her son, her 4 grandsons and her great-grandson. Jean and Jim would travel across the country by car, train and riverboat to meet newly found relatives, visit historic sites, and explore the USA from coast to coast often with friends in tow. When home, she enjoyed gardening, antiquing, and entertaining friends and family as well as hosting committee meetings and bible study.
Despite all of this, her greatest goal in life was to be a wife and a mother. We think she did a fine job! She is preceded in death by her husband James S. Cooke. She is survived by her son Jeffrey C. Cooke MD (Molly N. Cooke MD), daughter Judith S. Krew (Michael A. Krew MD), grandsons William N. Cooke, Louis K. Cooke MD, Travis S. Krew MD (Anna Shapiro-Krew MD), Andrew C. Krew (Jamie R. Krew) and great-grandson James Dalvin Krew.
A memorial service for both Jim and Jean Cooke will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11:30 am in the main sanctuary of The Old Stone Church, 91 Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. Valet parking will be provided.
